Architects Statement

The site was a large undulating inter-dunal site located a short walk through the national park from the ocean beaches of Balirgowrie. The striking natural character of the site demanded a unique Architectural response.

A resort style complex of buildings was developed with a focus on a relaxed recreational lifestyle. The various buildings are arranged on the site to ensure a seamless functionality to suit their purpose - from the drive-through boat shed and car parking area located well away from the house - to the mid level arrival point accessed via a covered timber bridge - or the guest pavilion off the tennis court.

Adult and children activity and sleeping zones are emphatically separated yet linked with the pivotal stair well and soaring stone blade wall. Living area opens up to various outdoor areas including the barbeque deck, the tennis court area and the elevated pool deck.

The building from used in the development draws on simple and stark geometric shapes. These are diffused and softened by the skeletal nature of the attached balconies and pergola elements as well as a carful composition of window openings.

The design explores the interplay between contrasting materials. The use of a natural dark stain to plywood panels and chunky timber battens contrasts with the raw industrial nature of the galvanized steel balcony and pergola member. This contradiction is further reinforced by the use of commercial aluminum windows and expansive areas of glass.
